Christopher Soto Puerto Rico, 1986 Pasithea’s Dream (2021) Mixed Media 36” x 48” The artist’s message behind this painting is that sometimes in life you may feel blindfolded and powerless through hardships, breakups, struggles, but the universe will always await to bring you back in alignment to your most desirable dreams. The inspiration of this painting is based on the Greek goddess Pasithea, wife of Hypnos and goddess of rest and relaxation. She is at sleep to portray her feelings of numbness through her numerous struggles, especially those involving breakups. But the universe, represented by gold circles, awaits to bring her back to her natural state of rest and relaxation. The symbols in this painting depict: 1) the gold circles represent our Universe as it continues to change and evolve towards infinity, 2) the wing over Pasithea’s eyes ties her back to her husband Hypnos, which is often represented with one or two wings over his ears in ancient Greek sculptures and drawings, 3) the color black represent her feelings of numbness, heartbroken and endless sadness.
